Dr. Allison J. McDade, MD Board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry

The answer

**ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is a persistent pattern of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, or both, that can cause problems in daily life.** Symptoms begin in childhood and usually continue into adulthood, the National Institute of Mental Health says. In 2024, about 7 million U.S. children ages 3 to 17 had a current ADHD diagnosis, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports. It is treatable, most often with medication, therapy, or both. Dr. McDade starts with an unhurried evaluation and builds a plan with you. **You understand what is going on with your child, and why.**

If you need help now

If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 or chat at [988lifeline.org](https://988lifeline.org/) to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you are Deaf or hard of hearing, use your preferred relay service or dial 711, then 988. In an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. This practice does not provide emergency services.

## Who will your child see?

Dr. McDade, at every visit. Health & Harmony Psychiatry is a physician-only practice, so every follow-up is with the physician who already knows your child's story.

Dr. McDade is trained in child and adolescent psychiatry, and she sees children from age 6. She is also a mother, and she has asked herself the question you may be asking now, whether it was the right time and the right fit for her own children.

The practice provides psychiatric evaluation, medication management, follow-up, and coordination with the patient's other clinicians. Full recovery is the goal, even if the best path is a referral.

## Has Dr. McDade been where you are?

> I was so worried watching our oldest in pre-K get frustrated and unhappy with how hard everything felt. Watching her gain the love I had for reading and excel in school has been a joy.

Dr. Allison J. McDade, MD

## How does Dr. McDade treat ADHD in children?

Dr. McDade hears your child's story and reviews your child's history and health, over 60 to 90 minutes. Understanding relies on context, and some stories need more time.

**Your child deserves the time to be understood.**

1. 01

   ### Booking and intake

Book online. A brief screening first confirms that telepsychiatry fits your child's needs. You'll complete a few intake forms in the patient portal, then meet with Dr. McDade for a full evaluation.

   Before the visit
2. 02

   ### Your child's story

It starts with what brought you here, when it began, and how it shows up at home, at school, and with friends.

   Unhurried
3. 03

   ### Your child's history

She asks about past diagnoses and treatment, and about any medications your child has tried, how they worked, and any side effects.

   Past treatment
4. 04

   ### Health and growth

She reviews your child's physical health, current medications, sleep, and development, along with your family's mental health history.

   Whole child
5. 05

   ### What she finds

She looks at what is typical for your child's age before she considers a diagnosis. Then she explains her findings in plain words and what they mean for your child's daily life.

   Plain words

   ### A plan built with you

You and Dr. McDade discuss each option in depth. When therapy is the better starting point, she refers to therapists she knows well.

   Collaborative

What you need

You need a quiet, private space for you and your child, and a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and internet. Bring a list of any medications your child takes, a sense of the history, and what you hope to work on. That is enough to begin.

## What helps a child with ADHD?

In Dr. McDade's experience, many teens and adults have lost their love of school or reading by the time they are diagnosed. She wanted her own children to keep theirs.

Many things can help a child with ADHD, she has found, starting with everyday habits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages these for children with ADHD.

Everyday habits

- Daily physical activity, based on your child's age.
- The recommended amount of sleep each night for your child's age.
- Healthy eating, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
- Less daily screen time from TVs, computers, phones, and other electronics.

For children 6 years of age and older, the recommendations include medication and behavior therapy together, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. That includes parent training in behavior management for children up to age 12, and schools can be part of the treatment as well.

In Dr. McDade's experience, those habits and supports, coupled with medication, can be the best fit.

Medications can affect children differently and can have side effects such as decreased appetite or sleep problems, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes. Dr. McDade watches closely at each follow-up and adjusts the plan with you.

**She builds each plan around your child's actual day.**

## What can ADHD look like in a young child?

A child with ADHD might show patterns like these, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.

What you may notice

- Daydreaming a lot.
- Forgetting or losing things.
- Squirming or fidgeting.
- Talking too much.
- Making careless mistakes or taking unnecessary risks.
- Having a hard time resisting temptation.

Other problems can look like ADHD, among them hearing or vision problems, anxiety, depression, sleep problems, and certain learning disabilities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes.

If some of this sounds familiar, the first evaluation can sort out what is behind it.

**ADHD is common, and it is treatable.**

## Is this care right for your child?

Dr. McDade treats anxiety, depression, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, and related concerns in children, and every condition has its own page in [Conditions Dr. McDade treats](https://www.healthandharmonypsychiatry.com/conditions?hsLang=en).

This care fits when

- A change in your child's mood, focus, sleep, or behavior has lasted, and you want a careful look.
- Your child's behavior or worry is hard to read, and you want someone to look at what is underneath.
- You want a psychiatrist who listens to you and your child, explains what she finds, and builds a plan with you.
- Your child is 6 to 10 and located in Texas at the time of each visit.

Another kind of care fits better when

- Your child needs emergency care. This practice does not provide emergency services.
- Therapy is the better starting point. [Contact us](https://www.healthandharmonypsychiatry.com/contact?hsLang=en) and we will help with referrals.
- Your child needs intensive outpatient care. Dr. McDade refers to local or virtual IOPs.
- Care begins at age 6. If your child is younger, [contact us](https://www.healthandharmonypsychiatry.com/contact?hsLang=en) and we will help with referrals.

For an older child

If your child is 11 or older, the [teen psychiatry page](https://www.healthandharmonypsychiatry.com/services/teen-psychiatry?hsLang=en) explains how care works for teens and adolescents, with parents included.

## Questions parents ask about ADHD

Is there a test for ADHD?

There is no single test to diagnose ADHD, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Deciding if a child has ADHD is a process with several steps, which is why the first evaluation takes time.

Does my child have to take medication?

No. Whether to start a medication, and where, is a decision you and Dr. McDade make together, after she explains what she recommends and why.

What if my child is younger than 6?

For children with ADHD younger than 6 years of age, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends parent training in behavior management as the first line of treatment, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Dr. McDade sees children from age 6, and the practice can help you find care for a younger child.

How long is the first evaluation?

60 to 90 minutes with Dr. McDade. The length follows your child's age, symptoms, and history, and it leaves room to connect and consider.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. McDade?

No. You can book a first visit without a referral, and a parent or guardian books for anyone under 18. Clinicians who want to refer a patient can use the [refer a patient page](https://www.healthandharmonypsychiatry.com/refer-a-patient?hsLang=en).

What if my child's behavior is the main concern?

She looks for what is underneath it. In her experience, a child who acts out is often a child who is struggling and does not yet have the words for it.

Does Dr. McDade work with my child's pediatrician?

Yes. Once you sign a release, she shares her findings and the treatment plan with your child's pediatrician by fax, note, or phone call.

How much does care cost?

Care is cash pay. A new evaluation with Dr. McDade is $465, and follow-up visits with Dr. McDade are $275. You receive a good faith estimate before your first visit.

Does Dr. McDade take insurance?

No. Care is cash pay, with rates set in advance and shared up front. You have the right to receive a [Good Faith Estimate](https://www.healthandharmonypsychiatry.com/good-faith-estimate?hsLang=en) explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

What ages does Dr. McDade see, and where?

Patients ages 6 to 70. Health & Harmony Psychiatry provides care by secure video to patients physically located in Texas at the time of their appointment. Telepsychiatry may not be appropriate for everyone; a brief screening determines fit. Certain medications, including some controlled substances, may only be prescribed to patients residing in Texas.

Is this an emergency service?

No. Health & Harmony Psychiatry does not provide emergency care. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, call or text 988, or call 911.
